Our 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program "Flashback to 1959" was a big hit, with more than 400 adults dishing up "sweet treats" - a.k.a. thousands of great books - from our Dewey's soda shop counter. A special thanks to all of our Business Sponsors who donated prizes for our program. Finally, congratulations to the 53 lucky readers who won prizes for their reading efforts.

He's ba....ack! UFOs and Unexplained Research

Chad Lewis returns to the Elk Grove library on Monday, November 2 at 7 p.m. with his tales of the unknown. The stories in UFO Wisconsin are not fiction. Each documented experience has its own intriguing angle...some scary, others downright bewildering. Although it's fun to rea abou these cases in New York or California, it is a much different matter when these strange events happen in our own backyard!

Our X-Treme Ice X-Hibition was X-hilarating!

Master Ice Sculptor Dan Rebholz visited the library on Saturday, January 31st and turned a 300-lb. block of ice into a work of art with his chainsaw. Rebholz is owner of World Class Ice Sculpture in Elk Grove Village and has over 22 years of experience as a professional ice sculptor.

Not only did he wow the crowd with his technique as he sculpted a seal sitting on a stack of books, balancing books on his nose, he was a lot of fun as well.

Thinkin' Lincoln

In honor of Abraham Lincoln's Birthday Bicentennial, come explore our collection of Lincoln materials. February 12 marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birthday. We have books, audiobooks and DVD materials on display in Adult Services.

A Few Favorite Lincoln Books & Movies...

Young Mr. Lincoln. Lincoln was first portrayed on film in 1911, 46 years after his assassination. He has been portrayed in many movies over the years, but a favorite continues to be Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), starring Henry Fonda. Fonda plays Lincoln as a young man, from his origins through his early successes as a lawyer in Springfield, Ill. Beautifully acted and filmed, it's one of director John Ford's most evocative pieces of Hollywood Americana.

National Treasure 2 : Book of Secrets. Not exactly a biographical sketch about Lincoln, but an entertaining tie-in to Lincoln nonetheless, is National Treasure 2 : Book of Secrets. It revolves around the assassination of President Lincoln. This is an action/adventure film in which Ben Gates, played by Nicholas Cage, is trying to clear his family name from association with the assasination.

Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Team of Rivals doesn't just tell the story of Abraham Lincoln. It is a multiple biography of the entire team of personal and political competitors that he put together to lead the country through its greatest crisis. Here, Doris Kearns Goodwin profiles five of the key players in her book, four of whom contended for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and all of whom later worked together in Lincoln's cabinet.

Henry and Clara by Thomas Mallon
This novel is based on the lives of Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris, a couple who were sharing President Lincoln's box at the Ford Theater the evening he was assassinated.

Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President by Allen Guelzo
The Atlantic Monthly said this was the best book written about Abraham Lincoln in a generation.
